Why Twitter Lists are Great for Hearing Through the Noise (and Stalking People)
Why Twitter Lists are Great for Hearing Through the Noise (and Stalking People) Whether youâre on Twitter or not, youâll know that it is a vast, noisy place. Thereâs no getting away from what people had for breakfast, the latest football score or an article on how to use Twitter better. All of this noise can put many recruiters off and stop them from getting real value from the channel, however itâs also a massively valuable tool! Bullhorn Reach reported in 2011 that Twitter attracted 3 times the amount of applications per job than jobs posted on Facebook and LinkedIn (compelling!) I am a massive fan of Twitter and the Lists functionality it provides. Heres why: What is a Twitter List? Simply, a list of Twitter users in one place that you can tune in to (and cancel out the rest of the noise). Think about the kinds of channels youd like on your Twitter TV: Clients listening to active clients and engaging with them. Targets listening in to conversations, hearing nuggets to help you with your strategy to work with them. Competitors who are they talking to? What are they talking about? Candidates keep these people sweet; they are instrumental. Personal I use Twitter for personal stuff, but I need to keep it out of work space, so I add Eddie Izzard, film critics, etc to a separate list and tune in when I can. Thought leaders / trade bodies / suppliers to the industry what are they sharing which can help your brain or give you something insightful to share? Twitter Lists can be private (lists of candidates, clients, competitors lists you dont want to share) or public (lists of great content providers, thought leaders lists that make you look good). Benefits of Creating a Twitter List: Hearing through the noise (currently approx. 400,000,000 tweets sent per day). Tuning in to specific types of content (jobs, people, content, competitors, client etcâ¦) â" create private lists to help you keep up to speed on your sector without giving away your gold! Demonstrating your approach / specialism â" create a public list called âGreat IT contentâ and sharing it with people is a great tool for community management / engagement tactic. â¦and best of all, you can put people in to lists without following them and attracting attention (shhhhâ¦) Stalking: Yes, you can add people to Twitter Lists without actually following them. Why is this a good thing? It keeps your following numbers down (strangely, this can help you attract more because you look less rabid!) They cant see that youve put them into a private list. Got a Great Public Twitter List and Want to Share it? Create the list Click onto it Grab the URL from the address bar (eg: https://twitter.com/LisaMariJones/technology) and tweet it / share through Facebook/ LinkedIn etc (Have you got a great Twitter List? Share it via the comments section below please.) Theres An App for that! Thereâs a million and 1 apps for Twitter that I could tell you about, but TwitListManager is a cute app that does what it says on the tin. Its great for helping manage your lists and much speedier than using Twitter. It: allows you to create lists (you can of course do this within Twitter too). you can scroll up and down the list of people you follow and simply tick which list to add them to (this is a pain in Twitter!) Nice and simple! Then you get all of the benefits mentioned above. Have a play and let me know what you think. What lists could you create? How could they help you get more engaged with Twitter? Could you generate precious leads, candidates and content from these lists? Let us know in the comments below.

Ethics in an Unethical World Does Common Decency Pay Dividends
Ethics in an Unethical World Does Common Decency Pay Dividends Greed. Double-dealing. Cheating. It seems there isnt a day that passes without news of unethical, or outright illegal, behavior on the part of successful companies or individuals. Common decency doesnt seem to be so common nowadays. One might even ask, are there any dividends of decency? I dont adhere to the biblical notion that money is the root of all evil. But its undeniable that once money or wealth bcomes the primary motivation, its easier to justify away ethics and standards. So how do you strive for financial freedom and hang on to respectable values? While thats a very personal question to answer, youll find some insights, and maybe answers, in three newly-published books. Theyll show you how decency not only pays dividends, but is the best policy in creating positive results. The Dividends of Decency If youve always held a belief that making a profit does not require you to sacrifice your principles, this book is for you. Author Donald Lee Sheppard reassures us that business ethics isnt an oxymoron. In fact, those wise words you heard from your Grandma were spot-on. Remember? Do what is right. Treat others as you would like to be treated Honesty is the best policy If that stirs up something inside you, that you know we need now more than ever, this book is a must read. Values-based business is not only alive and well, its the only way to assure longevity. And your reputation. The Geometry of Wealth Have you noticed that we live in a world that suggests to us that more is better, and equates wealth with possession? Have you wondered what that has to do with living a meaningful life? In the quest for more, when is enough, enough? Brian Portnoy sums up what he calls the four enduring sources of a joyful life. Connection the need to belong. Control the need to direct ones own destiny. Competence the need to be good at something worthwhile. Context the need for a purpose outside oneself. He goes on to show that true wealth and purpose can be woven together to create funded contentment. If you want to put a new perspective on how and why youre doing what you do, add this one to your reading list. Quantum Success Whether or not you embrace the Law of Attraction, (ala The Secret), one thing is sure. Cause and effect are immutable laws of the universe. If you live and practice joyful, ethical living, youre going to attract more of the same. Conversely, if you create chaos in business and life, there will be more of the same coming your way. And if you want to see where youre going, look back at where youve been. Author Christy Whitman lays out a roadmap that anyone can use to steer them towards a better future. Call it Karma, the Law of Attraction, or simply reaping what you sow, its as real now as it ever was. While life will always present surprises, more of them will be pleasant and welcome when youre living beyond and outside of yourself. Theres no magic in the book just truth. And who cant use a dose of that? (ed. note: scheduled for release in September 2018, available for pre-order) Decency DOES Pay Dividends We are constantly living at moments of choice. Each choice brings with it a result. Doing life with a mindset reflected in these authors words, making choices that make a positive difference in your life and the lives of others, will pay dividends far beyond what your bank balance will ever indicate. The dividends of decency.

How to Improve the Candidate Experience
How to Improve the Candidate Experience If talent management and employee engagement are on your radar, then youâll be aware that employer branding and the candidate experience are crucial to effective recruitment. Poor recruitment is costly in terms of impact on the bottom line. The CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) estimates the cost of recruiting a senior manager at £6,000. Additional costs resulting from a poor decision may include loss of productivity and deleterious effects on team morale. Personnel Today reported in 2012 that 74 percent of job seekers would talk to others about a negative experience with an organisation during the recruitment process. Given the potential impact on corporate reputation, getting the candidate experience right is a real priority. Look at your careers communications through the eyes of a candidate. Are the organisationâs culture and values clear? Do they demonstrate a strong employer brand and attract applicants who will be a good cultural fit? Research suggests that organisations that build a culture predicated on meaningful work, employee engagement, role and organisational fit, and strong leadership are outperforming their competitors and are likely to do better in attracting top talent. Improving the candidate experience: Involve the team Candidates will get a better feel for culture and climate at an employing organisation if they meet hiring managers rather than recruiters. This is particularly the case where the recruiter works for an external supplier, as that tends to increases disconnect between organisation and candidate. Communicate keep all candidates updated as to their progress throughout the recruitment process. Candidate experience and employer brand depend on consistent and clear communications to optimise engagement. Appreciate all candidates not just the successful ones. Research conducted across 3,000 candidates by recruitment experts, Talent Board, showed that 95% of unsuccessful candidates would reapply for another role with the company if the experience was positive. Feedback â" this is the least you can do, provide candidates with a clear understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. The organisation benefits from an enhanced candidate perception of the organisation (regardless of the hiring decision). Using social media Make the application process easier and faster, spread the word about job vacancies and allow candidates the ability to apply using mobile technology. Glassdoor found that about 90 percent of job seekers will use mobile during their job search process. So if you want to attract top talent ensure your website and career portals are optimised for mobile users. There is an added benefit in that adding social media to the hiring strategy gives current employees a route to share vacancies with their network. This advocacy is a real asset as employee referrals are an important source of high quality applicants and a very cost-effective recruitment strategy. Measure progress It is really useful to survey new employees for their perceptions of your hiring process. What better source of information could there be about the recruiting process? During the onboarding process ask new staff to complete a survey, preferably anonymous; ask about what the organisation did well and solicit suggestions for improvement. This allows the collation of up-to-the-minute data and the design of adjustments while sending the message to new hires that their feedback is valued. If you can make the recruitment process informative, intuitive and collaborative it affords candidates a real insight into the type of organisation you represent and shows you care about creating a great work environment. HR professionals should think about the candidate experience in the same way that marketing professionals think about the customer experience. Do it right and you will attract the best possible candidates and introduce them into the organisation as enthused and committed new employees.

Writing a Resume That is Better Than Those OthersIn order to send a resume, you have to be able to write a good email for sending resume. This can be a difficult task, as the tendency is to feel as if you are writing an essay, which is why some find it hard to get started. The best way to start is to have an outline and put some of the guidelines on it so that you will be able to write a good resume. Here are some tips you should know when writing a resume email for sending resume. The first thing you need to do is to have the personal information of the person on it. What Skills can Music Lessons Teach Your Children
What Skills can Music Lessons Teach Your Children So youâre thinking of signing your kids up for music lessons? Science has shown that youâve made the right choice. Children of all ages benefit from music, and the skills your child will develop through music lessons will serve them in all areas of their life. Not only is music engagement a great way to encourage the development of musical skills, the effects are present in other areas of life as well. If youâre hoping to improve your kidâs reading skills and social abilities, music might be your answer. Here are some skills your kids will develop as a result of taking music: Time management Signing your kids up for music lessons will give them the opportunity to engage with another activity outside of school. Depending on the age of your child, theyâll need to find a balance between all of their school work, music lessons, and other sports that they play, if any. If a child is really young, youâll need to provide them with a lot of structure and guidance in the early stages of their musical career. For example, you could create a visual schedule that indicates what days theyâll be practicing on, and for how many minutes. After a kid has practiced managing their responsibilities in this way for an extended period of time, balancing school and extracurriculars will become a piece of cake. Students with a lot of extracurriculars who are able to find a balance will be less stressed and more able to focus on the important things in life. Self-expression Music lessons will also give your children the ability to foster self-expression skills. Many kids struggle in creative writing classes because they arenât sure how to properly channel their ideas onto the page. By signing your kid up for music lessons, theyâll be given the opportunity to channel their musical ideas through their instrument on a regular basis. All music involves creative thinking, but composition will best allow your kid to cultivate these skills. Encouraging your kid to create their own songs or pieces will teach them that itâs important to share their ideas with others. Learning how to express oneself is an important skill for children to have as they get older. Whether kids are working on a group project at school or theyâre preparing for their first interview, expressing their ideas confidently will likely help them achieve important milestones. Academic skills Music lessons can also improve your kidsâ academic performance. If youâre looking to improve your childâs skills in all areas of learning, musical engagement may be the answer. A study from Northwestern University showed that kids who played instruments had better neural processing than kids who only listened to music. Another study found greater increases in IQ in kids who took music lessons when compared to kids who didnât. Of course, thereâs no guarantee that your kid will become the next Einstein once you sign them up for music lessons; but, science does suggest there are some very real benefits associated with music engagement. Additionally, if youâre hoping to improve your kidsâ reading comprehension skills, music lessons might give them an extra push in the right direction. Reading is one of the most important skills children develop, as it affects their success in all areas of life. Even in subjects that arenât primarily focused on reading, such as math and science, students will need to have sophisticated reading skills in order to understand problem-solving questions on their assignments and tests. At Northwestern University, a study found that kids who actively participated in their music class had better speech processing abilities and higher reading scores than children who werenât actively involved. Music functions in a similar way as a language since itâs often used to communicate with other people. We also write music notation in a way that resembles written English. Different notes symbolize different pitches and rhythms, just like how different letters are symbols for sounds and word meanings. This probably explains why kids who engage with music have such high language processing abilities, so if you want to reap the benefits, sign your child up as soon as you can. Social skills Music is a universal art form, which means other children will appreciate your kidâs skills and some might even know how to play instruments themselves. If youâve signed your kid up for music lessons and youâre looking to increase their social skills, try asking the music instructor if there are any other students that could play a duet with your kid. The process of practicing a duet with another student, making adjustments to improve the sound, and remaining patient with each other when mistakes happen will allow your kid to improve their ability to work well with another person. These skills will transfer to all areas of their lives, as children need to cooperate with others for group projects and eventually, in their professional work lives. If this list of skills has convinced you music lessons are the way to go, then take a look at this article on the price of guitar lessons to get started. About me: Iâm Natalie.
